Vortex dynamics and frustration in two-dimensional triangular chromium lattices

Abstract: The spin dynamics of the two-dimensional ͑2D͒ triangular lattice antiferromagnets HCrO 2 , LiCrO 2 , and NaCrO 2 is investigated by electron spin resonance. In these oxides, on approaching the Néel temperature T N from above, the divergence of the temperature dependent linewidth is well described in terms of a BerezinskiiKosterlitz-Thouless scenario due to magnetic vortex-antivortex pairing. A refined analysis suggests analogies to the melting scenario of a 2D triangular lattice described by Nelson, Halperin, … Show more

“…For this situation Bramwell and Holdsworth calculated that T KT should be approximately 85 % of T N [12]. For the b-parameter experimental values reach from 0.9 (NMR, [13]) to 4.1 (ESR, [10]) which is in agreement with theoretical estimations [11,14].…”

“…The movement of the vortices in the XY-model leads to a spin relaxation which depends on the inverse correlation length of the vortices. Neglecting a temperature dependence of the vortex velocity one finds [9,10]:…”

“…In recent experiments on the triangular-lattice Heisenberg AFs S=3/2 NaCrO 2 , [8][9][10][11] S=1 NiGa 2 S 4 12-18) and S=1/2 organic compounds, κ-(BEDT-TTF) 2 Cu 2 (CN) 3 19-21) or EtMe 3 Sb[Pd(dmit) 2 ] 2 , 22, 23) a spin-liquid like behavior without the standard magnetic long-range order was observed, while all of these compounds exhibit a weak but clear transition-like anomaly at a finite temperature. As a possible explanation of the observed experimental behavior, ref.…”

“…The intralayer exchange interaction (J) dominates over weak interlayer interaction (J ′ ) mediated through the long Cr−O−Li−O−Cr superexchange path. 9 The dominant 2D intralayer interaction effectively leads to the AFM transition at T N ≈62 K. [10][11][12][13][14] The Cr atoms surrounded by oxygen octahedra displayed in Fig. 1(d) exist in Cr 3+ state with S = 3/2.…”
