Objectives Previous work shows that health care workers, and particularly emergency department (ED) staff, are at an above average risk of workplace violence (WPV), defined as verbal threats or physical violence in the workplace. Previous data suggest that staff of a single pediatric ED frequently feel unsafe. The objective of this study was to conduct the first national survey study to assess the prevalence and incidence of WPV in the pediatric ED. Methods In this cross-sectional survey study, a representative sample of US pediatric emergency medicine physicians were invited to participate in a national survey adapted from the previously validated Workplace Violence in the Health Sector questionnaire from the World Health Organization. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of physicians who have been exposed to WPV. Rates of exposure to violence, reporting habits, and physician perception of various violence prevention strategies were studied secondarily. Results Surveys were completed by 207 (45%) invited participants, representing 31 US children's hospitals. The prevalence of WPV exposure was 96%. Physical violence with a weapon was witnessed by 20% of participants. Injuries requiring medical attention or time off work were experienced by 10% of participants. Half of participants never reported violent events. Security guards were welcome by 99%, armed law enforcement officers by 70%, and metal detectors by 81% of physicians. Self-arming was opposed by 85% of respondents. Conclusions Exposure to WPV is frequent among pediatric emergency medicine physicians with a prevalence similar to that of general emergency departments. Workplace violence remains underreported. This national survey contributes to the objective evaluation of individual- and systems-level violence prevention interventions.

In recent years, terrorist attacks have been spreading worldwide and become a public hazard to human society. The suspicious object detection system is an effective way to prevent terrorist attacks in public places. However, traditional systems face two main challenges: First, they need to conduct security checks at the entrance one by one, which leads to crowding; second, they rely heavily on screeners’ ability to understand security images, which can easily lead to misjudgment. To address these issues, we propose an AI-based W-band suspicious object detection system for moving persons that can perform a two-stage walkthrough screening for suspicious objects in an open area to maintain high throughput. The 1st screening uses millimeter wave radar and cameras to automatically screen suspects who may have concealed suspicious objects in an open area. The 2nd screening involves security personnel using a hybrid imager with active and passive imaging capabilities to identify the specific suspicious objects carried by the suspect. Convolutional neural network (CNN) based artificial intelligence (AI) technology will be used to improve the accuracy and speed of suspicious object detection. We performed an experiment to validate the proposed system. The usability and safety of the system are demonstrated by recognition rate (aka accuracy rate) or both recall and precision rate. In addition, in the process of improving the suspicious object recognition rate by AI techniques, we use generative adversarial network to help build a suspicious object database and successfully validate the effectiveness of the method and the factors affecting the suspicious object recognition rate to optimize the system.

The detection performance of a walk-through metal detector (WTMD) is affected not only by the electromagnetic properties and size and shape of the test objects, but potentially also by the type of motion of the test object through the portal of the WTMD. This motion, it has been argued, can contribute to the uncertainty in detecting threat objects being carried through the WTMD. Typical laboratory-based testing uses a robotic system, or similar, to push a test object through the portal with a trajectory that is a straight line and has a constant velocity. This testing, although reproducible and accurate, does not test for those trajectories the are representative of natural body motion. We report the effects of nonrectilinear trajectories on the detection performance of WTMDs.
