Warm homes for older people: aims and methods of a randomised community-based trial for people with COPD

Abstract: BackgroundChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is of increasing importance with about one in four people estimated to be diagnosed with COPD during their lifetime. None of the existing medications for COPD has been shown to have much effect on the long-term decline in lung function and there have been few recent pharmacotherapeutic advances. Identifying preventive interventions that can reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations could have important public health benefits. The Warm Homes for El… Show more

“…A number of prior studies have examined the impacts of housing interventions on COPD, and COPD forms an important part of the overall burden of disease. 118,145,146 In order to identify utility values for COPD to enable contextualisation of the results, a systematic approach was taken to reviewing the literature. The literature review is provided in Appendix 12.…”

“…People living with a chronic health condition may be especially reliant on energy-dependent devices for treatment or maintenance of their condition, lowering their ability to withstand inadequate or unavailable energy services. For example, patients with kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cardiovascular disease (CVD) rely on dialysis and oxygen machines that require electricity (72) and diabetics must refrigerate their insulin. Cancer patients in active treatment need more heat (73), and those suffering from hypertension are more susceptible to cold stress (74).…”

“…Furthermore, defining the harmful impact of indoor air quality on COPD morbidity is of utmost importance as indoor air pollution is a highly modifiable exposure. Feasible interventions that improve in-home air quality (111113) and optimize indoor temperature (114) may represent cost-effective and novel therapeutic arenas for a disease with limited treatment options.…”
