This recommendation is the outcome of research conducted by a working group within the RILEM Technical Committee 236-BBM 'Bio-aggregate-based building Materials'. The work of the group related to the study of construction materials made from plant particles. The major raw material utilised being renewable, recyclable and easily available plant particles. These particles are obtained from the processing of hemp, flax, miscanthus, pine, maize, sunflower, bamboo and other plants. In this report, the outcome of the Round Robin Testing is centred on hemp because hemp shiv is the bio-aggregate that is the most widely used in building materials and the most studied in the literature. The first round robin test of the TC-BBM published in the State of The Art Report of Technical Committee 236-BBM 'Bioaggregate-based building Materials' was carried out This recommendation was prepared by a working group within RILEM TC-236 coming from eight laboratories:

Integrating bio-resources in materials allows to reduce the environmental impact of the building industry. This study deals with fire-retardant treatments, alternative to boric acid and ammonium salts solutions, applied to hemp fibers for thermal insulation application. The aim is to limit the energy, sanitary and environmental impacts of the treatment, while optimizing the technical performances. A laboratory protocol evaluates the flame-retardant effect of the developed treatments. Treated fibers, including commercial treatments, are subjected to characterization tests: direct ignition small flame, thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis [TGA], differential thermal analysis [DTA]), pyrolysis-combustion flow calorimeter and cone calorimeter. Some of the methods have been adapted to be applied to fibrous materials. The obtained results orientate the formulation of a treatment and highlight the complementarity of the analysis methods. Coupling the results, the ConeTools's predictive model leads to the estimation of the reaction to fire class according to the Euroclass. Euroclass C appears accessible with a tailored treatment.

Preparation and Characterization of a Bentonite-Based Hybrid Gel for Coal Spontaneous Combustion Prevention

This paper presents an investigation of the feasibility of intercalating lignocellulose/xanthan gum (XG) and organic polymers into bentonite to obtain an efficient fire extinguishing gel material. The bentonite-based hybrid gel was prepared by adding polyacrylates, Al(OH) 3 , lignocellulose, and XG into a bentonite suspension, and the resulting gel was characterized. The results showed that no cracking and powdering were found on the surface of the hybrid gel due to the formation of the cross-linked network in the bentonite, and a wide mesopore size distribution and good thermal stability were observed. The hybrid gel also exhibits a wide range of water adsorption ratios, excellent water retention, adjustable gelation times, shear thinning characteristics, and improved compressive strength (the yield stress reaches up to 13 MPa). Based on these characterizations, the mechanism of hybrid gel formation is proposed. The inhibition performance of the hybrid gel on coal spontaneous combustion indicates that the addition of the gel slows down the oxygen chemisorption and thus increases the ignition temperature. Due to the presence of the hybrid gel in the coal, the crossing point temperatures were increased and the lowest CO concentration was produced.
