Valorisation of Exhausted Olive Pomace by an Eco-Friendly Solvent Extraction Process of Natural Antioxidants

Exhausted olive pomace (EOP) is the waste generated from the drying and subsequent extraction of residual oil from the olive pomace. In this work, the effect of different aqueous solvents on the recovery of antioxidant compounds from this lignocellulosic biomass was assessed. Water extraction was selected as the best option for recovering bioactive compounds from EOP, and the influence of the main operational parameters involved in the extraction was evaluated by response surface methodology. Aqueous extraction of EOP under optimised conditions (10% solids, 85 ºC, and 90 min) yielded an extract with concentrations (per g EOP) of phenolic compounds and flavonoids of 44.5 mg gallic acid equivalent and 114.9 mg rutin equivalent, respectively. Hydroxytyrosol was identified as the major phenolic compound in EOP aqueous extracts. Moreover, these extracts showed high antioxidant activity, as well as moderate bactericidal action against some food-borne pathogens. In general, these results indicate the great potential of EOP as a source of bioactive compounds, with potential uses in several industrial applications.

A new 1D azido bridged Cu(II) coordination polymer with 1,3‐oxazolidine based ligand, [Cu(H3L)(μ1,3‐N3)(N3)]n (1), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods. The structure of 1 was also determined by single crystal X‐ray analysis which indicated the 1D polymeric chain is generated by end‐to‐end (EE) azide bridge. The obtained compound was employed as catalyst in green click synthesis of β‐hydroxy‐1,2,3‐triazoles from one‐pot three‐component cycloaddition reaction of epoxide‐azide‐alkyne. The catalytic reactions were carried out in water as a safe, cheap and green solvent. The catalytic studies indicated that the obtained 1D azido bridged Cu(II) coordination polymer is an active catalyst for preparing β‐hydroxy‐1,2,3‐triazoles. The effect of temperature on the selectivity of the catalytic system was studied and the results indicated this catalytic system has high selectivity at low temperatures. The structure the product obtained from the reaction of 2,3‐epoxypropylphenylether, azide and 1‐ethynyl‐1‐cyclohexanol (T4) was determined by single crystal X‐ray analysis. The results indicate Cu(II) coordination polymers can be a new class of catalytic systems for green click synthesis of 1,2,3‐triazoles.

Olive pomace is a waste produced by the olive oil industry in massive quantities each year. Disposal of olive pomace is difficult due to high concentrations of phenolic compounds, which is an environmental concern. However, phenolic compounds have applications in the health industry.Therefore, extraction of phenolic compounds from olive pomace has the potential to remove an environmentally hazardous portion of pomace while creating an additional source of income for farmers and producers. Using advanced technologies including Ultrasound Assisted Extraction (UAE), combined with water as an extraction solvent, has recently gained popularity. The present study outlines the optimal UAE conditions for the extraction of phenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity from olive pomace. Optimal conditions were developed using RSM for parameters power, time and sample-to-solvent ratio. Total phenolic compounds determined by Folin Ciocalteu method and total major bioactive compounds determined by HPLC as well as antioxidant capacity (DPPH and CUPRAC) were investigated. The optimal conditions for the extraction of phenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity were 2 g of dried pomace/ 100mL of water at 250W power for 75mins. UAE improved the extraction efficiency of water and yielded extracts with high levels of phenolic compounds and strong antioxidant activity.
