Water-based flame retardant coating using nano-boehmite for expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam

Abstract: Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam has been successfully flame retarded by a water-based coating containing nanoparticles of boehmite and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) as char former. Boehmite enhances the charring of PVOH. The influence of suspension viscosity, coatings number, impregnation time and drying method was studied to monitor the amount of coating deposited and the coating thickness. The coating suspension is able to penetrate into the core of the foam. EPS without hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is upgrade… Show more

“…Then, 200 × 50 × 20 mm 3 BCs are directly exposed to a flame according to standard to NF EN ISO 11925‐2 using a lab‐made simulated single flame source fire as described by Hamdani‐Devarennes et al . Propane was used as combustion gas and the air flow rate in the combustion chamber was about 0.6–0.8 m s −1 .…”

“…That is why the control of energy and the substitution of fossil resources by renewable bio‐sourced materials are of prime importance. In this context, a sustainable development and eco‐design perspective for the building trades (new constructions and renovation) is important to find alternative solutions to traditional insulating materials (e.g., expanded polystyrene and polyurethane foams). Among them, using biobased, renewable, or recycled resources are deeply considered this last decade.…”

“…A relatively large decrease in compressive strengths of mixtures containing the treated EPS pellets was observed as compared to the controlled samples. Nonetheless, several types of EPS foams are highly toxic when exposed to elevated temperatures [185].…”

“…Among halogen‐free flame retardants, metal hydroxides occupy the largest portion of the flame‐retardant market . As a new type of flame retardant, boehmite (AlOOH) has attracted the interest of numerous researchers over the last few years because of its excellent advantages, including its high melting point, low thermal conductivity, easy access, low cost, and controllable morphology . It can be used as a nanofiller to improve the mechanical properties of the polymer, and its tailorable surfaces could make it easier to disperse evenly in resin .…”
