Water Management in a Closed Loop - Problems and Solutions at Brage Field

Abstract: Brage field offshore Norway is producing off plateau at 8500 Sm3/d oil. Associated daily produced water rates are in excess of 16000 m3. Following a change in injection scheme from seawater to aquifer water in 1997, two water supply wells were drilled and completed in the Utsira reservoir. Artifical lift from Utsira was achieved by installation of Electric Submersible Pumps. In parallel, the topside system was upgraded to facilitate complete PWRI (Produced Water Reinjection) in the Statfjord … Show more

“…In addition to the sea water, disposal water, which is produced in association with oilfield production, can also be recycled and reinjected into the reservoir, even though the problem of chemical incompatibility is still present in this case. It is noteworthy that injection of compatible water resources with the connate and formation water is something impossible to implement [22,23].…”

“…Conventional oil production was modelled on the Brage field in the North Sea (Figure A5), using publicly available data (Andersen, Halvorsen et al 2000, Wintershall 2016, NPD 2018. The water/oil production ratio, reinjected water/oil ratio, natural gas/oil production ratio and proportion of natural gas sold were modelled as for the year 2015 at Brage (Wintershall 2016).…”

“…In the long run, the resulting phenomena could be pore plugging in the formation near the wellbore, partial or total blocking of production tubing, pressure rise in injection wells, etc. (Andersen et al 2000;Graham et al 2001), resulting in overall reduced field productivity, thus losing the economic benefits of MWF.…”
