Water problems and hydrological research in the Yellow River and the Huai and Hai River basins of China

Abstract: Abstract:This paper deals with hydrological research in regard to the water resources crisis in the vulnerable areas found in the northern part of China. This area includes three main river basins, namely the basins of the Yellow (Huang) River, the Hai River and the Huai River. Several water problems are becoming very severe. Among them, two are the most critical: the Yellow River has been drained dry in the main course of its lower reaches and along its major tributaries, and the groundwater table has rapidly… Show more

“…In recent years, problems such as frequent droughts or flooding have affected most large rivers in China (Xia and Chen, 2001;Liu and Xia, 2004). Water shortages are becoming particularly serious in northern China because of dry climate conditions and heavy water demands (Liu and Xia, 2004;Yang et al, 2004).…”

“…Water shortages are becoming particularly serious in northern China because of dry climate conditions and heavy water demands (Liu and Xia, 2004;Yang et al, 2004). The Yellow River basin is the second-largest river basin in China ( Figure 1) and is important for agriculture, water storage and socioeconomic development (Cai and Rosegrant, 2004;Liu and Xia, 2004).…”

“…Though these projects have played a certain role in promoting economic development, excessive dependence on hydro-projects has triggered a slew of intractable problems, including soil alkalization, flow dry-up, and eco-environmental deterioration (Liu and Xia 2004;Pereira et al 2007). One example is the notorious Sanmenxia Reservoir in the middle Yellow River.…”
