The quality of the aquatic environment of high Andean lagoons was evaluated by means of multivariate statistical methods in two contrasting climatic periods. The water samples and benthic macroinvertebrates were collected in 22 sampling sites during the rainy and dry seasons. In each lagoon DO, DTS, EC, temperature and pH were determined in situ. The results revealed that the physicochemical parameters comply with the environmental quality standards for water, except COD and BOD 5. In the PCA of the physicochemical parameters, the first two axes explained 73% of the total variation. The gradual analysis in pairs showed significant differences. The SIMPER analysis determined an average of four families of benthic macroinvertebrates per lagoon that showed more than 70% contribution. The ANOSIM revealed that Tragadero lagoon differs significantly from the others. The DistLM showed a value of 0.46 of coefficient of determination. Therefore, the quality of the environment of high Andean lagoons evaluated by means of multivariate statistical methods presents important differences or dissimilarities not only in the physicochemical characteristics of the water, but also in the composition of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities.

Salinity has caused significant negative effects on agricultural production. This research is focused on the vulnerabilities of soil and water salinities on crop, fish, and livestock production across the Kalapara coastal belt of Bangladesh. Several parameters were measured as indicators of salinity. The electrical conductivity of water was found to be significant with TDS, F−, Cl−, SO42-, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NO2-, and PO43-. Chloride was found to be identical with SO42-, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Br−, and PO43-. Electrical conductivity, F−, Cl−, SO42-, Na+, K+, and Mg2+ were all found to be higher than the recommended values. Similarly, soil conductivity was found significant with TDS, Cl−, SO42-, Na+, F−, NO2-, NO3-, and PO43-. Chloride in soil samples was found statistically identical with SO42-, Na+, NO3-, and PO43-. About 200 ha fodder crops areas are affected each year due to salinity. Ninety-two percent of the areas were found to be salinity affected in the 36 current cropping patterns. Twelve percent of marine fish and 25 percent of shrimp species have disappeared as a result of salinity. The negative impact of soil and water salinity on crops, fish, and livestock has been increasing in this coastal belt.

ResumenEl estudio tuvo como finalidad analizar mediante la implementación de herramientas cualitativas de investigación las condiciones de higiene, aseo y disposición del recurso agua en las comunidades indígenas de La Guajira Colombiana. Se identificó en las zonas analizadas las concepciones que la población tiene con relación al agua y el saneamiento básico dentro de sus territorios. Las apreciaciones que la población presentó con relación a la calidad del agua estuvieron condicionadas por los factores culturales y las relaciones que estos han establecido a través de los años con su entorno natural. Los resultados muestran que los jagüeyes (zanjas) y los pozos son las principales fuentes de abastecimiento de agua que implementan la etnia Wayuu en el departamento. Se concluye que los malos hábitos higiénicos, las condiciones de aridez, la dispersión de los territorios indígenas, la carencia de sistemas de abastecimiento eficientes y la ausencia institucional son causas que inciden en el consumo de agua de mala calidad. AbstractThe study had the purpose of analyzing, through the implementation of qualitative research tools, the conditions of hygiene, cleanliness and water disposal resource in the indigenous communities of the Colombian guajira. The conceptions that the population has related to water and basic sanitation within their territories were identified in the analyzed zones. The appreciations of the population in relation to water quality have been conditioned by cultural factors and the relationships they have established over the years with their natural environment. The results show that jagüeyes (ditches) and wells are the main sources of water supply that implement the Wayuu ethnic group in the department. It is concluded that bad hygienic habits, living conditions, the dispersion of indigenous territories, the lack of efficient supply systems and institutional absence are the main causes that affect the consumption of water of poor quality.
