Water waves in a longitudinally oscillating container

Abstract

The results of an experimental investigation of surface gravity waves in a rectangular container partially filled with water and oscillating in the horizontal direction in accordance with the harmonic law are presented. The data obtained are, in particular, used to verify the theoretical solution by L.N. Sretenskii predicting the existence of an infinite denumerable set of resonance wave generation regimes. These regimes occur at the container oscillation frequencies coinciding with the odd eigen frequencies of the fluid oscillations. In the experiments in the resonance regimes the waves break up with the formation of cumulative jets. From the experiments it follows that at the container oscillation frequencies coinciding with the even eigen frequencies of the fluid oscillations the wave amplitudes and the energy received by them are minimum.
