WATERMED - WATer use Efficiency in natural vegetation and agricultural areas by Remote sensing in the MEDiterranean Basin

Abstract: The general objective of the WATERMED project is to develop a comprehensive method for the study of the water use and the resistance to the drought of the natural and irrigated vegetation in the Mediterranean Basin (see Fig. 1), by means of a combined historical and current space-based remote sensing database, vegetation models and field measurements. The general concept is to integrate all available data of the studied environments.

“…An intensive series of field experiments were conducted in Morocco from March 3-17, 2003. This field experiment was included in the WATer-use Efficiency in natural vegetation and agricultural areas by Remote sensing in the MEDiterranean basin project, whose description is given by [27]. Measurements of emissivity and surface radiometric temperature were carried out concurrently with the AATSR overpass.…”

“…The present study applied the S-NDVI THM (Simplified-NDVI THM ) which is a simplified version of the NDVI THM as proposed bySobrino et al (2008).Eq.11where εs and εv are soil and vegetation emissivities of the thermal bands, respectively, Pv is the proportion of vegetation. The land surface emissivity of band 10 is 0.964 and 0.984 for the soil and vegetation, respectively(Sobrino et al, 2001). Dates of the selected Landsat-8 data NDVI is the most often used vegetation index and has been used in monitoring global vegetation coverage over the past two decades(Jiang et al, 2006).…”
