Performance Enhancement of DWDM-FSO Optical Fiber Communication Systems Based on Hybrid Modulation Techniques under Atmospheric Turbulence Channel

In this paper, we enhance the performance efficiency of the free-space optical (FSO) communication link using the hybrid on-off keying (OOK) modulation, M-ary digital pulse position modulation (M-ary DPPM), and M-pulse amplitude and position modulation (M-PAPM). This work analyzes and enhances the bit error rate (BER) performance of the moment generating function, modified Chernoff bound, and Gaussian approximation techniques. In the existence of both an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, atmospheric turbulence (AT) channels, and interchannel crosstalk (ICC), we propose a system model of the passive optical network (PON) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique for a dense WDM (DWDM) based on the hybrid fiber FSO (HFFSO) link. We use eight wavelength channels that have been transmitted at a data rate of 2.5 Gbps over a turbulent HFFSO-DWDM system and PON-FSO optical fiber start from 1550 nm channel spacing in the C-band of 100 GHz. The results demonstrate (2.5 Gbps × 8 channels) 20 Gbit/s-4000 m transmission with favorable performance. In this design, M-ary DPPM-M-PAPM modulation is used to provide extra information bits to increase performance. We also propose to incorporate adaptive optics to mitigate the AT effect and improve the modulation efficiency. We investigate the impact of the turbulence effect on the proposed system performance based on OOK-M ary- PAPM-DPPM modulation as a function of M-ary DPPM-PAPM and other atmospheric parameters. The proposed M-ary hybrid DPPM-M-PAPM solution increases the receiver sensitivity compared to OOK, improves the reliability and achieves a lower power penalty of 0.2–3.0 dB at low coding level (M) 2 in the WDM-FSO systems for the weak turbulence. The OOK/M-ary hybrid DPPM-M-PAPM provides an optical signal-to-noise ratio of about 4–8 dB of the DWDM-HFFSO link for the strong turbulence at a target BER of 10−12. The numerical results indicate that the proposed design can be enhanced with the hybrid OOK/M-DPPM and M-PAPM for DWDM-HFFSO systems. The calculation results show that PAPM-DPPM has increased about 10–11 dB at BER of 10−12 more than the OOK-NRZ approach. The simulation results show that the proposed hybrid optical modulation technique can be used in the DWDM-FSO hybrid links for optical-wireless and fiber-optic communication systems, significantly increasing their efficiency. Finally, the use of the hybrid OOK/M-ary DPPM-M-PAPM modulation schemes is a new technique to reduce the AT, ICC, ASE noise for the DWDM-FSO optical fiber communication systems.

This chapter provides a review of factors driving technical development of broadband access networks, mostly toward higher bit rates and symmetrical services, together with a review of "fiber to the x" (FTTx) technologies for fixed access networks, including development and performance limitations of digital subscriber line (DSL) systems using twisted-pair copper cables, as well as fiber to the home systems. Characteristics and standardization of these systems are presented, together with a review of the two main competing broadband technologies: Data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) in coaxial cableT Vn e t w o r k sa n dt h e4 Ga n d5 Gw i r e l e s s networks. Additionally, a short list of recent developments in passive technologies (fibers, cables, and connectors) is included. Finally, the issues related to dismantling of the traditional copper telephone network and ensuring continuity of voice services in emergency situations are analyzed.

Wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) is considered as the ultimate solution for next-generation access networks thanks to the unlimited bandwidth guaranteed by a dedicated wavelength (or a pair of wavelength) for each subscriber. However, some challenging issues are still blocking the way of mass deployment of WDM-PON systems. This dissertation is devoted to developing some enabling solutions for these challenging issues in WDM-PON technologies, including 1) implementation of cost-effective colorless optical network units (ONUs) and 2) delivery of broadcast service over WDM-PON architectures.The primary concern in WDM-PON implementation is the cost-efficiency of ONUs. Self-seeding of reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) has been demonstrated as a cost-effective method to realize colorless ONUs in WDM-PONs. This dissertation first provides an in-depth study of the transmission performance of selfseeded RSOA-based WDM-PONs. The impact of various system parameters on the system performance are investigated through experiments. The bit rate of a self-seeded RSOA is increased by boosting the seeding power as well as employing electronic equalization. A low-cost colorless WDM-PON system is proposed where 5-Gb/s downstream transmission is enabled using self-seeded RSOAs and 1.25-Gb/s upstream transmission is achieved using remote-seeded RSOAs. ii Another work dedicated to develop low-cost colorless ONUs is to utilize a multimode-injected Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) as the remote seeding light in carrier-distributed WDM-PON architectures. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by the improved transmission performance when compared to the system in which an amplified spontaneous emission source is adopted as the remote seeding light. The latter part of the dissertation discusses two new techniques to enable broadcast service over WDM-PON architectures. One of the broadcast-capable WDM-PONs is based on polarization multiplexing technique. The downstream unicast and broadcast data are carried by two orthogonally polarized optical beams. Not only does this technique support broadcast services without allocating additional wavelength channels and using high-frequency subcarrier multiplexing, but it also depolarizes the seeding light to FP-LDs for upstream transmission. However, active polarization tracking is required to demultiplex the two polarization-multiplexed signals at each ONU, which may hinder the real deployment of such a system.
