Wearable Edge AI Applications for Ecological Environments

Abstract: Ecological environments research helps to assess the impacts on forests and managing forests. The usage of novel software and hardware technologies enforces the solution of tasks related to this problem. In addition, the lack of connectivity for large data throughput raises the demand for edge-computing-based solutions towards this goal. Therefore, in this work, we evaluate the opportunity of using a Wearable edge AI concept in a forest environment. For this matter, we propose a new approach to the hardware/so… Show more

“…An innovative approach to taking advantage of edge intelligence has been presented by Silva et al [99]. Their paper introduced a wearable device in the form of a helmet, equipped with a camera and an additional edge server that is capable of running edge intelligence workloads for performing leaf disease detection in forests.…”

“…Development of effective acoustic sensor networks (ASNs) may also enable simplified and energy‐efficient protocols for reliable, large‐scale data delivery and analysis. Recent applications of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in precision agriculture (Rehman et al, 2022; Slalmi et al, 2021; Ullo & Sinha, 2021) and environmental monitoring (Almalki et al, 2021; Silva et al, 2021; Ullo & Sinha, 2020) have allowed for better landscape surveillance, faster data collection/analysis and improvements in yield and growth capacity. Although applications incorporating ASNs into IoT are fairly recent developments, ASNs have been important for data collection and communication in underwater, underground, wherever radio frequencies are unusable (Kamruzzaman et al, 2018; Sharma et al, 2020).…”
