Wearable Sensor Networks for Motion Capture

Abstract: Abstract-This work presents the development of a full body sensor-based motion tracking system that functions through wearable inertial sensors. The system is comprised of a total of ten wearable sensors and maps the player's motions to an onscreen character in real-time. A hierarchical skeletal model was implemented that allows players to navigate and interact with the virtual world without the need of a hand-held controller. To demonstrate the capabilities of the system, a simple virtual reality game was cre… Show more

“…In the sequel, we demonstrate the practical application of the two novel fading models proposed in the previous section. We begin with the emerging area of wearable communications which have recently received significant attention due to the wide range of promising application areas including medical, sports, military and entertainment [32]- [35]. In this study, we consider wearable off-body channels which are an important part of personal area networks (PANs).…”

“…Motion capture systems vary by the type of devices used to capture the motion of the human body, including wearable devices and sensors, multiple cameras, a single camera, or involving multiple types of equipment together. Arsenault and Whitehead [25] presented a system composed of ten wearable inertial sensors connected in the form of a network to determine the change in the body movement. Zhang and Zhang [26] proposed an inexpensive human motion capture system prototype using a flexible architecture and distributed computing technology.…”

“…However, the quality of animations produced is often paid with the need for expensive equipment, large performance spaces, skilled actors, and laborious post-processing steps [8]. Technological advancements recently reduced, at least for some usage scenarios, the impact of these constraints, by letting also novice animators record full-body motion data using, e.g., consumer-level vision-based marker-less tracking systems or wearable sensors [22], [23].…”
