Wet labs: A useful tool in training surgical residents in a third world country

Abstract: Highlights Wet labs are a useful, cost-effective and safe tool in teaching of Cardiothoracic Surgery residents. In a third world country where advance real life simulators are not available. It improves resident's tissue handling and surgical skills. Allows faculty members to give continuous feedback to their residents.

“…However, learning these complex procedures is crucial for a junior surgeon. To overcome these hurdles, simulation has made headway in surgical training programmes including those in cardiac surgery ( 2 , 3 ). In one study, Fan et al showed that after 1 week of practice on a coronary anastomosis simulation model, residents exhibited a 20% decrease in task completion time ( 5 ).…”

“…However, Cardiac surgery being time sensitive, having no margin of error, this method is very challenging and make long learning curve for residents and potentially dangerous for the safety of the patient. 3 According to studies, contemporary advancements such as wet labs, dry labs, and simulators have demonstrated improved performance and superior outcomes. 4 In developed world Simulators is offering a training experience that is both realistic and progressively challenging, while also aligning with valid educational goals and objectives.…”
