Wetland Ecosystem Services

Abstract: Wetlands and the ecosystem services they provide are hugely valuable to people worldwide in many ways: for livelihood, for their biodiversity and existence values and for their economic benefits. Yet many of these services, such as the recharge of groundwater, water purification or cultural values are not immediately obvious when one looks at a wetland and most are public services that are not traded in conventional markets. This Chapter gives a brief introduction into the concept of wetlands ecosystems servic… Show more

“…Since the economic value of Tablas de Daimiel does not include all possible benefit values that presumably represent additional services observed in the literature (Groot et al. []), we use the 720 €/ha as a lower bound. Then we apply a sensitivity analysis with higher values of wetland services as is reported below.…”

“…1093 / QD-TCMT of the Vietnam Environment Administration in 2016-the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) (http://www.monre.gov.vn/English) participated in the Ramsar Convention with the concept of "Wetlands are swampy areas, peatlands, areas of regular or temporary inundation, including coastal areas and island areas, with a depth not exceeding 06 meters when the tide is at the lowest tide". Particularly, coastal wetlands include salt and brackish lands along the coast and islands where are influenced by tides [52]. In the above definitions, the wetland is generally defined as an ecological transition zone, a transitional area between terrestrial and flooded environments, or the place where soil inundation creates the development of a typical flora.…”

“…The major ESs of wetlands are regulating ones e.g. climate mitigation, carbon sequestration, flood prevention, groundwater recharge, water purification [1][2][3]. The wildlife and biodiversity of wetlands are mostly the best out of their region, so recreation and tourism services of wetlands are also relevant [4][5].…”
