What can we Learn from Explanted Endovascular Devices?

Abstract: Holes in the polyester fabric and frame dislocations are specific for the design of Stentor and Vanguard grafts. The early corrosion of the stent metal Nitinol in these devices is surprising. Until more experience is gained with other devices, we have to be reminded, that the "gold standard" for the long-term durability of artificial vascular grafts is still "today's" conventional graft.

“…Although there were no material failures with the handmade SGs during the follow-up period, material failures in commercially available SGs have been reported. [52][53][54][55] It is possible that the currently available handmade SGs, which are constructed from a stainless steel stent welded using solder and covered by a hand-sutured ultrathin woven fabric, may show material failure in the long term. In addition, the possibility of endoleak and/or migration in the future cannot be ruled out because the number of patients in this study was small and the follow-up period was short.…”

“…However, there is a dearth of information in the literature regarding those responses and properties in a product form that is relevant to biomedical devices: Nitinol tube. Motivated by the cited failures of many hundreds of stents in vivo [78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89], as well as personal experience with investigation of failed biomedical devices, it is the primary goal of this research to determine the fracture and fatigue properties, and the relevant microstructural variables, that influence the failure of Nitinol tube.…”

“…Além disso, possui grande elasticidade e resistência à fratura. Nitinol é a sigla de Nickel Titanium Naval Ordinance Laboratories, cuja liga metálica foi inicialmente desenvolvida para fins militares 18 A fratura de stents de nitinol pode estar relacionada ao polimento e ao revestimento da superfície do stent com óxidos amorfos 19,20 .…”
