What does urban informatics add to planning support technology?

Abstract: In the Urban Informatics session of the Computational Urban Planning and Urban Management (CUPUM 2019) conference (where we started the idea of this special issue), there were heated discussions on the fundamental meaning of the term "urban informatics". Questions revolved around its definition, its role in urban planning, and more specifically, its role in planning support technology. Some consider urban informatics a vehicle for the "seamless transitioning between the visible and the invisible infrastructure… Show more

“…Interestingly, neither of these terms features strong use in the abstracts, titles and keywords of the PSS corpus despite being the topic for the latest edited volume (Geertman et al, 2021) and a few prominent exceptions including Pan, Chen, et al, 2020. The citation connections are also relatively weak between the two fields (Figure 4) indicating again that a lot more work is to be done to bridge these lines of enquiry if PSScience is to become an applied stream for research in these domains as envisioned in recent papers framing the field (Geertman and Stillwell, 2020b, 2020c; Pan, Geertman, et al, 2020).…”

“…Much like the cities they seek to represent, there is also increasing recognition in research that PSS are not stand-alone systems but part of a broader social context and ecology of technological innovation. In addition, since inception a number of adjacent fields have sprung up including ‘urban informatics’ (Pan, Geertman, et al, 2020), ‘urban analytics’ and ‘urban science’ (Geertman and Stillwell, 2020b), responsible for a large volume of research output. These trends have led to recent moves to recast ‘Planning Support Systems’, a field which focused on the means of planning, into a broader field of ‘Planning Support Science’, a context-sensitive field focused on the goals of planning (Geertman and Stillwell, 2020c) and one better integrated into the surrounding ecosystem of research and urban digital innovation.…”

“…While urban planners and policymakers are pivotal to making cities more inviting for bicycling, it is a significant challenge for them as they deal with cities with complex issues and numerous stakeholders across government and industry. The rapid development of new technology has helped planners to improve urban planning processes [75,76]. To enable planners to make effective decisions, finding out how, when, and why they should invest in the bicycling infrastructure is essential.…”

“…Pan, Geertman, and Deal [67] and Pan, Chen, Gao, Deal, and Liu [68], in their review of informatic technologies for urban planners, present new accessibility models that help planners integrate land use and transportation planning. These new models have been used in the context of social justice and transportation.…”
