What is an enhancer?

Abstract: Tight control of the transcription process is essential for the correct spatial and temporal gene expression pattern during development and in homeostasis. Enhancers are at the core of correct transcriptional activation. The original definition of an enhancer is straightforward: a DNA sequence that activates transcription independent of orientation and direction. Dissection of numerous enhancer loci has shown that many enhancer‐like elements might not conform to the original definition, suggesting that enhance… Show more

“…Each gene is made up of different sections, like a promotor sequence, various exons, and introns [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. However, other compartments, like RNA polymerase, transcription factors (TF), and enhancer sequences, are essential for the expression of a gene [ 20 , 21 ]. Humans also have a diversity in their genomes called alleles, which affect how they respond to different diseases.…”

“…promoters and enhancers) [ 2 ]. In the 1980s, enhancers were first discovered in simian virus 40 (SV40) [ 3 ]. Subsequently, researchers have gradually characterized different types of enhancers, and various techniques have been developed to predict and study the function of enhancers ( Figure 1 ).…”
