What Is Measured in the Scanning Gate Microscopy of a Quantum Point Contact?

Abstract: The conductance change due to a local perturbation in a phase-coherent nanostructure is calculated. The general expressions to first and second order in the perturbation are applied to the scanning gate microscopy of a two-dimensional electron gas containing a quantum point contact. The first-order correction depends on two scattering states with electrons incoming from opposite leads and is suppressed on a conductance plateau; it is significant in the step regions. On the plateaus, the dominant second-order t… Show more

“…The λ F /2-periodic oscillations characteristic of g (1) 1 [21,22] are also present in the nonlinear conductance corrections, with a phase shift building up at large distances. This phase shift could be related with the well-defined phase conditions observed as a function of V in the difference of conductance changes between two tip positions [7].…”

“…For a QPC r m t m = 0 on a conductance plateau [21,22], yielding a vanishing μ. Moreover, away from the edges of the plateau the V and U derivatives of r m t m also vanish, and thus 115414-2 g (1) i = 0.…”
