What's next in 'omics: The metabolome

Abstract: The youngest sibling in the family of 'omics fields is growing up. Maturing right behind genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, metabolomics is the comprehensive analysis of small molecule metabolites. Since most metabolites are generated by enzymatic proteins that result from gene expression, and metabolites give organisms their biochemical characteristics, the metabolome links genotype with phenotype. Metabolomics is still developing, though, as vendors adapt separation and detection instruments to meet … Show more

“…Additional information, such as fragmentation data, is essential for structure elucidation of a mass measurement. Putative identifications require matching an experimental MS/MS spectrum with a reference fragmentation spectrum [24, 26]. Metabolomics spectral libraries have been created with experimental data from commercially available or synthesized standards.…”

“…It is important to mention that, though GC-MS is considered a powerful tool for the identification of volatiles or the compounds able to volatilize through derivation, the identification based on GC-MS faces many challenges like the identification of many isomers and isobars of the volatile compounds, such as lipids. So, there is a need to couple GC with other sensitive mass analysis techniques such as time-of-flight (TOF), a technique providing very high resolution (Tachibana, 2014). The superior performance of two-dimensional GC coupled to TOF (GC×GC/TOF-MS) has been demonstrated (Yao et al, 2015).…”

“…Metabolomics measures physiology and as such has the ability to link function and genotype with phenotype (35). Metabolomics offers multiple advantages over previous methods of studying embryo metabolism.…”
