What should be treatment approach in metaplastic breast cancer? A report of 5 cases

Abstract: Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MBC) is a general term defining a heterogeneous group that includes biphasic lesions, with both malignant epithelial and mesenchymal tissue components. Although its clinical findings are similar to those present in invasive ductal carcinoma, it rarely presents with the findings of inflammatory breast cancer. It is generally seen in the fifth decade. MBC spreads via lymph and blood circulation. Most common distant metastasis areas include lungs and the bone. Although the treatment … Show more

“…The hematogenous spreading route is particularly more common in subtypes with predominant sarcomatoid carcinoma in the spectrum [ 9 , 14 , 26 ]. Acar et al reported that the risk of distant metastasis was higher in MpBC patients than in patients with ductal or lobular adenocarcinomas, while the risk of lymph node involvement was lower in MpBC patients [ 11 ].…”

“…Despite the larger tumor size, MBC is less commonly associated with axillary node involvement (6 %–26 % of cases) compared to standard invasive breast cancer [ 9 ]. MBC commonly metastasizes to the lungs and bone tissue via the bloodstream [ 10 ]. A review of 15 clinical cases, retrieved from PubMed, was conducted and the results are presented in Table 1 .…”

“…MBC: metaplastic breast carcinoma; NSIBC: nonspecific invasive breast carcinoma; ER: estrogen receptor; PR: progesterone receptor; Her-2: human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. e Breast Journal 3 is poorly differentiated and greatly aggressive [10]. Previous studies showed that MBC mainly metastasized via the lymphatics and blood, and early hematogenous metastasis often involved the lung and the bone, especially in metaplastic carcinoma with mesenchymal differentiation [11]. ere were 11 cases of carcinoma with mesenchymal differentiation, of which 9 cases could obtain follow-up data.…”
