Wheat Straw in Growing Cattle Diets

Abstract: SummaryThree cattle growth trials were conducted to evaluate the use of untreated and alkali-treated wheat straw as energy sources for ruminants. In trial 1, daily gain decreased as level of untreated wheat straw increased in the diet. A 14% decrease in gain occurred when the level of straw was increased from 30 to 40% of the diet. In trial 2, cattle fed 4% NaOH-treated wheat straw at the 30 or 60% level had better daily gains and feed efficieneies (P<.05) than those fed untreated wheat straw. In trial 3, when… Show more

“…Consequently, substituting roughage for corn could reduce ADG and G:F (Owens, 2011). The value of crop residues may be improved by the use of an alkaline treatment such as Ca(OH) 2 (Rounds et al, 1976;Waller, 1976) or NaOH (Berger et al, 1979a;Lesoing et al, 1980;Paterson et al, 1980). Fahey et al (1993) reviewed 32 studies in which NaOHtreated crop residues were included (compromising at least 60% of diet DM) and found a 30% improvement in total tract DM digestibility.…”

“…However, NaOH-treated feedstuffs can negatively shift the site of fiber digestion to the lower gut (Berger et al, 1979b), which potentially diminishes the energetic benefit. Thus, calcium hydroxide has been used as a substitute for NaOH (Rounds et al, 1976;Waller, 1976;Lesoing et al, 1980;Paterson et al, 1980). Compared with NaOH, calcium oxide is less caustic, is easier to handle, and provides a source of Ca.…”

“…After the grain is harvested, much of the straw is left in the field. The relatively low available energy value of wheat straw limits its nutritive value for feedlot cattle ( Lesoing et al, 1980 ). However, its functional value as a roughage source is well documented ( Ware and Zinn, 2005 ; Salinas-Chavira et al, 2013 ).…”
