When forms meet genes: revision of the scleractinian genera Micromussa and Homophyllia (Lobophylliidae) with a description of two new species and one new genus

Abstract: The scleractinian family Lobophylliidae is undergoing a major taxonomic revision thanks to the combination of molecular and morphological data. In this study, we investigate the evolutionary relationships and the macro- and micromorphology of six nominal coral species belonging to two of the nine molecular clades of the Lobophylliidae, clades A and B, and of Symphyllia wilsoni, a lobophylliid species analyzed from a molecular point of view for the first time. Sequence data from mitochondrial DNA (COI and the i… Show more

“…(). We also included Homophyllia hillae (Wells, ) as a separate taxon although it has recently been synonymized under Homophyllia bowerbanki (Milne Edwards & Haime, ) (Arrigoni et al ., ); our study presented a fine opportunity to test the relatedness between them.…”

“…In each quadrat, all coral colonies were identified to the genus. Recent changes to the nomenclature of regional species (Table S1) included divisions and synonymy of a few genera (Arrigoni et al, 2016;Budd, Fukami, Smith, & Knowlton, 2012;Huang, Benzoni, Arrigoni, et al, 2014;Huang, Benzoni, Fukami, et al, 2014). Members of the synonymised genera showed minimal bleaching severity and no immediate mortality, suggesting negligible impact of taxonomic updates on bleaching patterns found among the synonymised genera (Table S2).…”
