When one childhood meets another – maternal childhood trauma and offspring child psychopathology: A systematic review

Abstract: Children of mothers who were exposed to maltreatment in childhood appear to be at an increased risk for psychopathology. Mothers with traumatic childhood experiences should be offered improved access to psychological therapies and parenting programmes to help mitigate the potential impact of child maltreatment on future generations.

“…Research on the intergenerational impact of ACEs, which focuses on associations between parent ACEs and children's health, development, and functioning, has found continuity in risk of poor outcomes. 33 , 34 , 36 , 46 , 50 , 55 , 58 Thus, parent ACEs may contribute to chronic pain in youth, especially given their association with parent factors (eg, mental and physical health) that are implicated in pediatric chronic pain. 4 , 14 , 16 , 26 , 42 , 46 …”

“…However, it should be noted that findings regarding the relationship between maternal childhood trauma and internalizing versus externalizing behavioral problems are mixed. One study reported an effect on internalizing behavior (Dubowitz et al, ), three studies found an effect on externalizing behavior (Miranda et al, , ; Myhre et al, ), and five studies found an effect for both or total behavioral problems (Collishaw et al, ; Min et al, ; Rijlaarsdam et al, ; Roberts et al, ; Thompson, ; For a more extensive overview see Plant, Pawlby, Pariante, & Jones, ). These mixed results may result in part from specific approaches or populations studied, including child age and population demographics, and covariates included in the study.…”
