When punishment strikes late: The effect of a delay in punishment and punishment feedback on cooperation and efficiency.

Abstract: Laboratory experiments established that peer punishment is a powerful cooperationenhancing institution. However, this evidence centers on punishment that affects punishees immediately, whereas in many out-of-lab instances, punishment only takes effect some time after it has been inflicted. Moreover, studying the consequences of a delay in the effect of punishment could shed light on the channels through which punishment facilitates cooperation. A delay may (a) prevent punishees from immediately responding to t… Show more

“…The public goods game can be studied with live individuals [13] or simulated in either spatial games [11,14] or in networks as graphs [6]. It can also be studied by deterministic dynamical equations theoretically [10] with averaged payoffs and well-mixed populations.…”

“…This makes for an stimulus not to have an immediate response. From now on, we suppose that there is a delay of τ MCS at the time the defectors receive its punishment [13]. The punishers pay the expense of the punishment the instant they detect someone defecting and the fine is calculated with the conditions of this moment, but actually it is not charged until some time later.…”

“…In social cognitive theory, behaviors are changed within individuals and the environment [8,9]. The former factors include personality [10], promotion [11], and mentality [12], and the latter include population characteristics [13], regulations [14], and cultural background [15]. In terms of the influence of objectives, several studies have focused on the characteristics of tasks, such as structure, content, and atmosphere [16,17].…”
