When will taxonomic saturation be achieved? A case study in Nunduva and Kyrtuthrix (Rivulariaceae, Cyanobacteria)

Abstract: A number of heterocytous, mat-forming, tapering cyanobacteria in Rivulariaceae have recently been observed in both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts in the rocky intertidal and supratidal zones. These belong to the genera Nunduva, Kyrtuthrix, and Phyllonema and have been the subject of several recent studies. Herein, two new species of Nunduva (N. komarkovae and N. sanagustinensis) and two new species of Kyrtuthrix (K. munecosensis and K. totonaca) are characterized and described from the coasts of Mexico. Genet… Show more

“…Members of the family are mostly aquatic, both freshwater and marine, occasionally also found in soils, on rocks, and in other terrestrial biotopes (Berrendero-G omez et al 2016). The aquatic taxa often form macroscopic epilithic mucilaginous colonies (Rivularia, Nunduva, Dichothrix), sometimes incrusted by calcium carbonate, or even live endolithically (Mastigocoleus, Kyrtuthrix) in the marine tidal zones (Shalygin et al 2018, Johansen et al 2021. A single genus FIG.…”

“…The 16S rRNA gene is highly divergent within Nostocales, and the number of operons varies between one and five (Johansen et al 2017(Johansen et al , 2021. However, such additional operons have not been noted for Aliinostoc strains (Bagchi et al 2017, Kabirnataj et al 2020.…”

“…A new taxon may be described -apart from traditional morphological criteria -either via the provision of a sequence or a suitable genetic marker novel to a database and sufficiently distinguishable from others (Dvořák et al 2018;Li et al 2019). Additionally, polyphasic, phylogeny-based approach accepting just monophyletic taxa revealed ubiquitous cryptic diversity in the Cyanobacterial systematics (e.g., Johansen et al 2021). Therefore, the novel approach has led to an explosion of descriptions of new taxa in recent years.…”
