Whiskers of Al2O3 as reinforcement of a powder metallurgical 6061 aluminium matrix composite

Abstract: An Al-Mg-Si alloy matrix composite reinforced with 10% volume of alumina whiskers (Al 2 O 3 w) has been processed by powder metallurgy and investigated. The Al 2 O 3 w were produced as single crystal c-axis alpha alumina fibres at pre-pilot scale via Vapour Liquid Solid (VLS) deposition in a cold-wall airtight furnace with alumina linings. As far as we know, this is the first report of the utilization of whiskers of Al 2 O 3 as reinforcing elements for Al alloys. Tensile tests have been performed on the compos… Show more

“…8 Later approaches have adopted a so-called "displacement reaction" by heating mixtures of powder aluminum (Al) and metal oxides, such as SiO 2 , 10-17 MoO 3 , 17 WO 3 , 17 or SiC 18 in an argon atmosphere to fabricate single-crystal fibers, whiskers, and nanowires. The growth of the fibers/whiskers was found to be mostly in the [0 0 1] direction through the VLS mechanism [10][11][12][13][14][15]18 or through a mechanism that is analogous to Ostwald ripening. 16,17 Both of these mechanisms are categorized as tip growth models, resulting in characteristic round droplets or slight sharp curvatures on the tips of the fibers/whiskers.…”

“…But in the present case, whiskers used were of comparatively larger diameter, i.e., of the order of 100nm which resulted in decreasing the agglomeration tendency and improvement in hardness. Moreover, the whiskers were added in the form of AACH which has comparatively better sorption properties and thus gives better dispersion than direct alumina [34]. Fig.…”

“…For matrix alloys, the combination of a ductile material with a high strength material, to reinforce the constituent, leads to notable shear and compression strength, and superior service–temperature abilities [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Compared to unreinforced alloys, all reinforced forms have significantly better retention of anisotropic properties, and specific properties at room and high temperatures [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Despite encouraging results with the reinforcements, there were still defects in the composites, mostly during the fabrication process (i.e., particles congregated severely, irregular voids from rapid coagulation, and cylindrical voids precipitated by dissolved gases).…”
