White‐emitting phosphor Ba2B2O5:Ce3+, Tb3+, Sm3+: Luminescence, energy transfer, and thermal stability

Abstract: A series of Ba2B2O5: RE (RE=Ce3+/Tb3+/Sm3+) phosphors were synthesized using high‐temperature solid‐state reaction. The X‐ray diffraction (XRD), luminescent properties, and decay lifetimes are utilized to characterize the properties of the phosphors. The obtained phosphors can emit blue, green, and orange‐red light when single‐doped Ce3+, Tb3+, and Sm3+. The energy can transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ and Tb3+ to Sm3+ in Ba2B2O5, but not from Ce3+ to Sm3+ in Ce3+ and Sm3+ codoped in Ba2B2O5. However, the energy can … Show more

“…Figure A‐D show XRD patterns of as‐synthesized BMBO:Ce 3+ , BZBO:Ce 3+ , BCBO:Ce 3+ , and BSBO:Ce 3+ phosphor. According to our previous study, the XRD pattern of BBO:Ce 3+ can be assigned to the monoclinic cell (JCPDS No.24‐0087). It can be seen that the phases of BMBO:Ce 3+ , BZBO:Ce 3+ , BCBO:Ce 3+ , and BSBO:Ce 3+ phosphors gradually changed from Ba 2 B 2 O 5 to Mg 2 B 2 O 5 , Zn 2 B 2 O 5 , Ca 2 B 2 O 5 , and Sr 2 B 2 O 5 , respectively.…”

“…Borate compounds have attracted much attention due to their simple synthesization condition, excellent thermal stability and absorption in the n‐UV region. In our previous study, the Ba 2 B 2 O 5 :Ce 3+ phosphor emits a blue emission, and has been attracting much attention due to the application in LEDs . In order to detailed tune the excitation band and the luminescence color, in this work, Sr 2+ , Ca 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Mg 2+ with larger radii are introduced to change the coordination environment around Ce 3+ ions.…”

“…Furthermore, since red radiation is beneficial to the growth of plants that can control the gas exchange and preserve the necessary closure for internal matter turnover in the atmosphere, laser‐induced red illumination has been endowed with a greater prospect of application as special light source accompanied by the continued enthusiasm . Among the trivalent RE ions, samarium ions (Sm 3+ ) possessing rich energy‐levels are preferred in various hosts for efficient emissions in visible and near‐infrared (NIR) wavelength since its 4 G 5/2 excited state exhibits higher quantum efficiency and multifarious radiative emission channels . In particular, the potential red emission bands of Sm 3+ are desirable in developing spontaneous radiation light source in special laser‐induced illumination.…”
