Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) genome project: analysis of sequenced clones from egg, instar, and adult (viruliferous and non-viruliferous) cDNA libraries

Abstract: Background: The past three decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in interest in the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, owing to its nature as a taxonomically cryptic species, the damage it causes to a large number of herbaceous plants because of its specialized feeding in the phloem, and to its ability to serve as a vector of plant viruses. Among the most important plant viruses to be transmitted by B. tabaci are those in the genus Begomovirus (family, Geminiviridae). Surprisingly, little is known about the genome … Show more

“…While there are reports of whitefly genes involved in insecticide resistance [83]; viral [84] and bacterial infections [85], few reports presented how entomopathogenic fungus regulates its gene expression during the infection of living insects. The few existing papers only examined the fungal response on specific in vitro tissues of insects rather than on live insects [24], [86], [87].…”

“…The annotation of differentially expressed gene sequences was confirmed using the published MEAM1 and MED whitefly genomes (Xie et al 2017;Chen et al 2016), as well as thousands of expressed sequence tags from Be. tabaci (Leshkowitz et al, 2006;Wang et al, 2011). We used a cut-off E-value of 10 −5 .…”

“…The availability of large cDNA and genomic DNA sequence data sets for M. persicae has paved the way for functional genomics studies, which have the potential to identify aphid genes involved in resistance to plant defenses and insecticides (Leshkowitz et al, 2006; Ramsey et al, 2007). The goal of the current study is to examine the nicotine resistance, growth, and transcriptional responses of tobacco-adapted and non-adapted M. persicae lineages.…”
