Wide Bandwidth Low Profile Pifa Antenna for Vehicular Sub-6 GHZ 5g and V2x Wireless Systems

Abstract: This paper introduces a low profile wideband Planar Inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for vehicular applications in the 5G systems (below 6 GHz) and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications. The antenna covers a wide range of bandwidth which operates from 617 MHz to 6 GHz while having an acceptable filtering on the GNSS bands. This design's physical dimensions and electrical performance make it suitable for low profile wireless applications in the automotive field. Measurement data on Ground plane (GND) and on vehic… Show more

“…A tri-polarized antenna was designed to cover 5G and V2X frequencies in [4] with an H-plane gain of 2.05−2.88 dBi in the V2X band; however, it comes with an increased antenna volume with dimensions of 76×76×17mm 3 . Similar drawbacks of large volumes can also be seen in [5][6][7][8][9] with less than zero gain in [7] and [8], whereas a gain of 0.97 dBi was reported in [9]. A mean realized gain of 0.043 dBi was achieved in [10] with a multiband antenna that covers long-term evolution (LTE) and V2X with a big volume of 120 × 70 × 0.1mm 3 .…”

“…e performance requirements are in terms of frequency bands with its corresponding voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) and the required linear average gain (LAG) in certain elevation angles as well as the polarization. e antenna performance requirements shown in Table 2 are derived from the automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) specifications at the pigtail level [23,30].…”

“…Most of the listed antennas covers the cellular bands. Two antennas cover cellular and V2X frequency bands [23,24] with larger size than the proposed antenna, which covers the GNSS higher band too.…”

“…Table 2 shows the values of different geometrical parameters of the antenna. An extensive detailed design guideline for this PIFA, its unique features compared to other elements, and its RF properties and performance are presented in full detail in our previous work in [11]. Two PIFA elements were fabricated and orientated in an opposite way (i.e., mirrored in the yaxis) to have a complementary radiation pattern for each element so that the combined pattern will be omnidirectional.…”
