Wideband antenna for mobile terminals based on the handset PCB resonance

Abstract: A novel microstrip dual-band EBG has been proposed together with design alternatives for flexible system accommodation. Based on a previously proposed EBG, the structure of the DB-EBG is designed first and then optimized by means of a full-capable simulator based on the 3D FDTD method. The DB-EBG was also fabricated and its reflection/transmission characteristics were measured for validation purposes. The very good agreement between the numerical simulations and experiments shows the power of this design appro… Show more

“…In some situations, 120 mm may be too large for a handset phone. Therefore some researchers propose to electrically enlarge the ground plane by adding slots on the ground plane [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. As a result, handhold and head proximity degrade antenna performance.…”

“…This is mainly due to their miniature size, easy fabrication, and low cost [2,3]. To achieve a wide bandwidth in the GSM850/900 band, the system ground plane of a PIFA or IFA acts as part of the antenna, thereby improving the bandwidth and gain performance [4][5][6][7][8][9]. This is necessary, especially as the mobile device is quite small.…”

“…If we consider a rectangular plate with different dimensions to those used in chapter 4, for example a PCB with the aforementioned typical dimensions of 100x40 mm 2 , similar current distributions are obtained for the characteristic modes, as discussed in [154]. Modal properties are also very similar, except for the resonant frequencies, which are obviously modified when dimensions change.…”

“…As each resonant mode presents a different resonant frequency and distinct bandwidth properties, the information provided by each mode can be very helpful in the design process [153] [154].…”

“…Figure 6.3 presents the definitive structure and the dimensions of the feeding rectangular monopole that after an optimization process have resulted in: h= 10 mm, h 0 = 0.5 mm, w 0 = 1.2 mm, w= 27 mm and L f =72.5 mm. Further details about the antenna design are given in [145]. Nevertheless, when the rectangular feeding monopole is added to the basic structure, it acts as an inductive loading.…”
