Wideband Polarization Conversion Metasurface for RCS Reduction of Antennas

Abstract: Polarization conversion metasurface (PCM) with wide operating band and high polarization conversion ratio is proposed for antenna radar cross-section (RCS) reduction. A 3rd-order quadrate fractal structure (QFS) is designed as the PCM element that the polarization conversion ratio is greater than 80% from 10.45 GHz to 32.15 GHz (relative bandwidth of 101.9%). The PCM is applied in the RCS reduction of microstrip antennas by chessboard-like arrangement on the antenna. The performances of the proposed PCM and an… Show more

“…In recent years, there has been an increasing focus among researchers in the field of antenna research on reducing the RCS, alongside endeavors to expand frequency bandwidth and improve realized gain, resulting in some satisfactory progress [17,18]. The reduction of RCS in antennas plays a crucial role in achieving stealth mode in communication devices, and it also significantly influences the stealth capabilities of defense electronic equipment [19,20].…”

“…The scheme was based on the microstrip resonators and absorptive frequency selective surface (AFSS). A polarisation conversion metasurface (PCM) with a wide operating band and high polarisation conversion ratio was proposed for antenna RCS reduction by Hong et al [ 16 ], and they constructed a third-order quadrate fractal structure. The PCM was applied for the RCS reduction application of microstrip antennas using a chessboard-like arrangement.…”

“…However, the RCS reduction is achieved by sacrificing the profile for these antennas, which also increases the complexity of processing. The second type is to place randomly or regularly arranged metasurfaces around the antenna radiating patch 13–16 . In Sharma et al, 15 A low RCS microstrip patch antenna is proposed, with an impedance bandwidth of 5%.…”

“…The out‐of‐band RCS is reduced by randomly loading the metasurface units. In Hong et al, 16 A low RCS antenna is proposed, with an impedance bandwidth of 13.8%. It is worth noting that most broadband low RCS antennas focus on the reduced bandwidth of RCS, rather than the radiation bandwidth of low RCS antennas.…”
