Will achieving herd immunity be a road to success to end the COVID-19 pandemic?

Abstract: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the availability of several different new vaccines, their varying supply levels, effectiveness, and immunity duration across different ethnic populations, together with natural infection rates, will have an impact on when each country can reach herd immunity (ranging from 15.3% to 77.1%). Here we estimate the population proportions still required to gain immunity (ranging from 0.01 to 48.8%) to reach an overall herd immunity level to stop the exponential virus spread in 32 s… Show more

“…Recent studies suggest that vaccination is very effective in driving down the transmission of the disease ( Baden et al., 2021 ; Voysey et al., 2021 ), but there are also uncertainties about the effectiveness of current vaccines to current and future variants. Vaccination is an essential pathway to safely achieve herd immunity against COVID-19 ( World Health Organization, 2020a ), but the herd immunity equation may be affected with the emergence of variants ( Kwok et al., 2021a ) and vaccine breakthrough infections ( Hacisuleyman et al., 2021 ). Latest results suggests that COVID-19 vaccination is still considered as effective for protection against moderate to severe disease and deaths from the current variants of concerns such as Alpha and Delta ( Lopez Bernal et al., 2021 ).…”

“…However, the exact proportion of immune people needed to achieve herd immunity is difficult to estimate, as it depends on the type of virus, along with many other factors. Japan is a good example, being one of the countries which has a large gap between the proportion of people with immunity needed to achieve herd immunity and the proportion of people who are already immune [6]) (Note that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which had not been approved in Japan as of November 2021, requires only one dose). However, in some countries, full vaccination rates had drastically increased by summer or autumn 2021.…”

“…It also helps to identify more cases, especially asymptomatically infected individuals who do not usually show COVID-19 symptoms, to design the most effective control strategies to mitigate the epidemics. High estimation of seroprevalence of COVID-19 would indicate that most of the population have been infected, and the herd immunity threshold will likely be reached ( George et al, 2021 ; Kwok et al, 2021 ). Hence, the control efforts should be emphasized on recovering for the damages caused by this deadly virus, which includes suspension of control and intervention programmes, immunization and primary health care services for other infectious diseases; as well as rebuilding for better socio-economic development.…”
