Wind Power Potentials in Cameroon and Nigeria: Lessons from South Africa

Abstract: Abstract:Wind energy has seen a tremendous growth for electricity generation worldwide and reached 456 GW by the end of June 2016. According to the World Wind Energy Association, global wind power will reach 500 GW by the end of 2016. Africa is a continent that possesses huge under-utilized wind potentials. Some African countries, e.g., Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and South Africa, have already adopted wind as an alternative power generation source in their energy mix. Among these countries, South Africa has inves… Show more

“…Consequently, the π (a, b) and π (b, a) values can be broken down into components corresponding to the economic (Ec), social (So) and environmental (En) criteria. For the component corresponding to the economic criteria, the preference index is described by formula (6), and the formulas for the social and environmental criteria are analogous.…”

“…This represents 70% and 40% of the installed capacity of all RES [2,4], respectively. At the end of 2015, the installed capacity of wind power plants around the world was equal to 432 GW [5], and, in 2016, it was already 456 GW [6].…”

“…To further encourage investments in the renewable power segment, the Renewable Energy Research and Development division of the NERC have developed the renewable energy Feed-in-Tariff (REFITS) that are included in the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) II issued in January 2012 [33]. The Federal Government has set a 10% target for renewable energy usage until 2017 while a 20% target has been set for the year 2020.…”

“…The climate is composed of a wet season and a dry season (Ayonghe and Ntasin, 2008). Mount Bamboutos hills offer favorable conditions for electricity production with wind speeds reaching 15 m/s (Mas'ud et al, 2017). With 25 million inhabitants, Cameroon faces a big problem of access to electricity.…”
