Wing diagnostic characters for Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex nigripalpus (Diptera, Culicidae)

Abstract: Wing diagnostic characters for Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex nigripalpus (Diptera, Culicidae). Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex nigripalpus are mosquitoes of public health interest, which can occur sympatrically in urban and semi-urban localities. Morphological identification of these species may be difficult when specimens are not perfectly preserved. In order to suggest an alternative taxonomical diagnosis, wings of these species were comparatively characterized using geometric morphometrics. Both species… Show more

“…The sexual dimorphism of the wing shape was also significant in all comparisons, even when the allometry was removed. Our interpretation of these results is that the evolution of wings is controlled by different factors in the two sexes, as already proposed by others for blood-feeding mosquitoes (Devicari et al 2011, Vidal et al 2011. It is plausible to consider that the wings of males and females do not follow the same evolutionary pathway in Ae.…”

“…The wings of culicids have been geometrically characterised using the low-cost "geometric morphometrics" method (Jirakanjanakit et al 2008, Henry et al 2010, Devicari et al 2011, Vidal et al 2011. Microevolutionary studies of the wings are feasible because of the strong heritability of the relevant phenotypic traits.…”

“…scapularis divergem morfologicamente como observado em outros culicídeos (Dujardin 2008b, Vidal et al 2011. Para avaliar se há dimorfismo sexual de asas nesta espécie, machos e fêmeas provenientes de duas localidades do Estado de São Paulo foram comparados utilizando-se técnicas de morfometria geométrica sobre a venação alar.…”

“…In this sense, geometric morphometrics can be used to quantify this variation. Currently, this method has been largely employed both in distinction of closely related species [28][29][30][31] as in microevolution studies [32][33][34][35][36]. Considering the lack of biological and ecological studies regarding Cx.…”
