Wireless Body Area Networks in mHealth

Abstract: Abstract. Wireless body area networks (WBANs) are emerging as important networks, applicable in various fields. In this chapter a comprehensive survey of WBANs that are designed for applications in healthcare is presented. The survey consists of stand-alone sections focusing on important aspects of WBANs. Topics covered are: monitoring and sensing, power efficient protocols, physical layer, MAC protocols, routing, system architectures and security. The chapter concludes with a discussion of open research issue… Show more

“…flat architectures and multi-tier architectures [9]. In flat architectures each sensor node sends the data to personal server applications running on the PDA whereas in multitier architecture multiple sensor nodes in base tier collectively send the data to the PDA (at the third layer) through the gateway at second tier which acts as an interface between the base tier and the third tier as shown in Figure-1.…”

“…Due to advancement in communication technology and electronics, a newer type of network has emerged called as Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) which is becoming one of the prominent areas of research. It has been emerging because of its cost-effective nature, usage in wide spread applications and having the ability of remote monitoring [1]. It proposes encouraging services in different areas, such as mobile health-care, defence, industries, research and business [2].…”
