Wireless information and power transfer: from scientific hypothesis to engineering practice

Abstract: Recently, there has been substantial research interest in the subject of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) due to its cross-disciplinary appeal and its wide-ranging application potential, which motivates this overview. More explicitly, we provide a brief survey of the state of the art and introduce several practical transceiver architectures that may facilitate its implementation. Moreover, the most important link-level as well as system-level design aspects are elaborated on, along … Show more

“…The basic benefits of MIMO have also been further exploited in the context of the Network MIMO [5], cooperative MIMO [6], massive MIMO [7] and interferencelimited MIMO [8] concepts. Their applications have also been expanded to the areas of cognitive radio [9], physical-layer security [10], [11] and wireless powered communications [12].…”

“…By contrast, the complexity of the decoupled detection is imposed by detecting the N a conventional modulated symbols of (13), plus the complexity (κ) imposed by the comparisons invoked for non-coherently detecting the spatial symbol of (12), which may be written as O(N a M + κ). More details can be found in [18].…”

“…Information-theoretic investigation in this direction started in [1], and has now spawned hundreds of results in the wireline [2] and especially the wireless setting (referred to as SWIPT (simultaneous wireless information and power transmission) in literature), see e.g. [3], [4] for recent surveys. These classes of problems are important for sensor networks, Internet of Things (IoT), and similar settings where terminals may require energy.…”

“…They successfully lit a 60-W bulb at a distance of 7 feet-more than 2 m using helical coils of high Q-factor (= ω 0 L/R). Since then, numerous papers have investigated theoretical [2,3] and practical [4,5] evolutions of WPT systems. The transfer efficiency of WPT systems has been well known to depend on the figure of merit, defined as the product of the Q-factor (the geometric mean of Q 1 and Q 2 ) and the coupling coefficient (k), and the load resistance.…”
