Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks for Telemonitoring Applications

Abstract: Wireless Local area networks (wLANs), particularly from standards 802.1b/g, have become extremely widespread in a very short time, in society in general as well as at an industrial level. One of the limitations of this technology is its coverage. The family of new standards, such as 802.16, allows us to overcome these limitations, enabling then their use as Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), as required by some application domains of industrial networks. In the present work we present an application of this tec… Show more

“…The first of these are not standardized and are based on proprietary technology. WiMAX networks, with coverage's of up to 8-50 Km (depending on whether they are LOS or NLOS), are a clear alternative for the development of networks for son tele-operation and tele-supervision (Cardeira, 2006;Silvestre et Al. 2007 (Li, 2007).…”

“…In this image, we can see 1 hop links (stations 1 and 2) and 2 hop links (stations 3, 4 or 5). The use of the 5 GHz band means there are no costs involved, and there is less saturation than with the 2.4 GHz band, as well as a greater quantity of available channels, making WiMax and 802.11n good candidates for these applications [6].…”
