Wireless Sensor Networks and TSCH: A Compromise Between Reliability, Power Consumption, and Latency

Abstract: Reliability, power consumption, and latency are the three main performance indicators of wireless sensor networks. Time slotted channel hopping (TSCH) is a promising technique introduced in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard that performs some steps ahead in the direction of the final dream to meet all the previous requirements at the same time. In this paper, a simple and effective mathematical model is presented for TSCH that, starting from measurements performed on a real testbed, permits to characterize both the n… Show more

“…Instead, [20] aims at reducing energy consumption during network formation. Works in [21], [10] suggest practical guidelines and analyze how some communication parameter settings impact on performance indicators, including power consumption. The accuracy of synchronization among TSCH nodes is another aspect that affects performance and power consumption.…”

“…This means that other approaches are needed to save energy without impairing communication reliability, which operate at the medium access control (MAC) layer. One of the most popular techniques conceived to this purpose is time slotted channel hopping (TSCH) [5][6][7]. In this case, all motes are time synchronized and transmissions take place at predefined instants, which are known to all the participants of any communication.…”
