WiSE-MNet: an experimental environment for wireless multimedia sensor networks

Abstract: We propose a simulation environment for networks for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs), i.e. networks with sensors capturing complex vectorial data, such as for example video and audio. The proposed simulation environment allows us to model the communication layers, the sensing and distributed applications of a WMSN. This Wireless Simulation Environment for Multimedia Networks (WiSE-MNet) is based on Castalia/Omnet++ and is available as open source to the research community [1]. The environment is de… Show more

“…The wireless channel connects different nodes with each other and also simulates the behavior of the wireless link. The physical process also connects the nodes within the network and feed the sensor manager Wise-MNET provides an extension to some of Castalia's functions or features to generate simulation environment for WMSN [9]. WiSE-MNet provides a platform for the designing of the network prototcols.Wise-Mnet is designed for evaluating WMSN but doesn't provide QOE support and video control, by which we may evaluate the multimedia content from user's perspective.…”

“…Simulation experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of MEVI by using the extended version of Wireless Simulation Environment for Multimedia Networks (WiSE-MNet) [13], which is based on OMNeT++ [14]. The extended version of WiSE-Mnet [13], integrates the functionalities of WiSE-Mnet [15], Wvsnmodel [16] and Evalvid [17]. Also, it implements the change of the direction of the camera's FoV to retrieve multimedia content from the target area.…”

“…In the context of WVSN, Authors of [9] proposed to integrate EvalVid along with WiSE-MNet [10] in the Castalia simulator [11]. However, standard video coding techniques based on motion estimation algorithm such as MPEG-4, H.263 or H.264 supported by EvalVid are not suitable for sensor nodes [12].…”

“…WiSE-MNet++ [43] is an extended version of WiSE-MNet (Wireless Simulation Environment for Multimedia Networks) [10] that includes the implementation of several state-of-the-art algorithms for smart-camera networks. WiSE-MNet++ addresses the need for co-design of network protocols and distributed algorithms for WMSNs.…”
