Wnt1 and SFRP1 as potential prognostic factors and therapeutic targets in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The Wnt signaling pathway plays a key role in insurgence and progression of many different forms of cancer. Some crucial components of the Wnt pathway have been proposed to be novel targets for cancer therapy. To date, the Wnt signaling pathway has not been studied in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC). This study was designed to investigate the expression of Wnt1 and SFRP1 from the Wnt pathway in CSCC. Tissue samples were obtained from 35 patients with CSCC and 30 controls admitted to the Xinj… Show more

“…The Wnt/␤-catenin signaling pathway is a pathway involved in the cell growth, the signaling barrier of which may lead to both abnormal cell growth and differentiation (26). Multiple studies have highlighted the key role of the Wnt signaling pathway in carcinogenesis and neoplastic transformation of different forms of human cancer, including gastric cancer (48), colorectal cancer (45), breast cancer (19), and prostate cancer (17,22). HOX genes, including both HOXA13 and HOXB5, are able to participate in cancer development by activating the Wnt/␤-catenin signaling pathway (15,20).…”

“…Aberrant activation of the Wnt signaling pathway and subsequent initiation of EMT have been demonstrated to be associated with poor prognosis in various types of cancer, including cSCC (10,14,21). In the present study, the predictive value of the protein expression of two EMT genes, AXIN2 and SNAIL, in the recurrence of cSCC was evaluated over a long-term follow-up period.…”

“…Based on real‐time PCR analysis a decrease was observed in the expression level of Wnt1 , and CTNNB1 on the treatment with ibuprofen as well as other studies confirm the upregulation of Wnt1 , and CTNNB1 in Gastric cancer (Chiurillo, ; Le et al, ; Yang et al, ), and the overexpression of Wnt1 investigated in Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma patients, so targeting them would be a good suggestion for preventing Gastric cancer (Halifu et al, ).…”

“…Assay organized in three independent triplicate experiments. ( Ã P < 0.05 vs. control group, Student's t-test analysis) upregulation of Wnt1, and CTNNB1 in Gastric cancer (Chiurillo, 2015;Le et al, 2015;Yang et al, 2016), and the overexpression of Wnt1 investigated in Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma patients, so targeting them would be a good suggestion for preventing Gastric cancer (Halifu et al, 2016).…”
