‘Wonmi’, an Early Maturing, High-Quality, Sweet Persimmon Cultivar

Abstract: In 2014, a new high-quality, pollination-constant, non-astringent persimmon (Diospyros kaki L. Thunb.) cultivar, 'Wonmi', a breeding of 'Fuyu' and 'Taishu' from 2005, was developed. 'Wonmi' fruit were harvested on October 8 in Yeongam, South Korea. The fruit are medium-sized (220 g on average), with a high amount of soluble solids (15.1 o Bx). The juicy flesh has a pleasant taste and crispy texture. The fruit shape is round oblate, and the skin color is orange with a graceful appearance. Physiological disorder… Show more

The main producing area is in the southern part of Korea, especially in the Gyeongsangnam-do province, where 90% of the exported fruit originates [ 6 ]. The main persimmon variety exported is the non-astringent ‘Fuyu’ [ 3 , 5 ].…”

“…Korea has overcome its export competitiveness by growing newly improved persimmon cultivars, introducing farming and postharvest techniques for high-quality persimmons, and actively developing new markets. In 2014, the ‘Wonmi’ cultivar was introduced as an early-maturing, pollination-constant non-astringent (PCNA), high-quality, sweet persimmon cultivar derived from a cross between ‘Fuyu’ × ‘Taishu’ in Korea [ 6 , 7 ]. The average ‘Wonmi’ fruit weighs about 220 g, and its soluble solids content (SSC) average 15.1 °Brix.…”
