Wood Fireproofing Coatings Based on Biobased Phenolic Resins

Abstract: Different formulations of phenolic resins based on two natural products, namely, lignin and tannins, were implemented as biobased fireproofing coatings for wood. Moreover, inorganic nanoparticles were included as additives for improving the thermal resistance of the coatings. The biobased coating formulations were first characterized for their structure and thermal properties via Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). Then, their fireproofing performance was assessed over a s… Show more

“…Most obviously, the surface of sample is relatively irregular with many wrinkles and protrusions in Figure 7e, resulting from the relative increase in the cross-linking densities and the microphase separation between the hard and soft segments. 56 This may be another reason for the significant increase in the water CA of the sample as the IHA ratio increased from 2.5% to 10%. The CA analysis is used to study the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the coating.…”

“…Although tannin has been commercialized for leather manufacturing industries, in the recent past, tannin has emerged as a promising natural phenolic polymer and has significant applications in various sectors, including adhesives, coatings, bio-foams, automotive and building sectors etc. 215,216 Tannin as a raw material, however, for adhesive applications still poses certain issues, like short pot life, high viscosity, reactivity, and poor weather resistance. Comprehensive investigation and introduction of newer concepts like copolymerization, chemical modifications etc., can catalyse the development of tannin as a sustainable raw material for adhesive applications.…”

“…With the promotion of global policies on resource shortage and environmental protection, seeking or developing a renewable resource to substitute phenol for preparing PF is becoming more important.
