Work needs of long-term mental health care users: Is vocational rehabilitation enough?

Abstract

Background Mental health care users (MHCUs) have needs resulting from their participation in work-related-interventions. In long-term institutions, however, work interventions are neglected due to insufficient resources and knowledge needed to respond to these work needs. Objective To identify and describe the work needs of long-term MHCUs. Method A descriptive, qualitative inquiry study was conducted with 18 participants using semi-structured interviews. Results The need to improve quality of life and the need to fulfil contextual and societal demands emerged. Conclusion MHCUs not only appreciate work to earn a living, but also to achieve a sense of health and well-being, fulfil life-roles, and possibility for community reintegration.
