This article is purely ethnographic, and its purpose is to provide insight into the ways healing is conceived by both ayahuasqueros and Western participants in the context of shamanic tourism in Iquitos, Peru. “…Similarly, our "non-traditional" ceremony practices were relatively common in traditional contexts, although neither group of practices was commonly reported in ayahuasca churches. Such a result is consistent with other research that has highlighted the incorporation of Christian and other spiritual practices and symbols by both traditional indigenous and Mestizo ayahuasca practitioners in South America, as well as the transportation and incorporation of indigenous "shamanic" South American practices and perspectives in ayahuasca healing ceremonies in Western countries (Fotiou, 2012;Labate and Cavnar, 2014;Horák and Verter, 2019;Wolff, 2020).…”

“…As Shanon (2003) notes, case reports of chemically-induced synaesthesia are typically of the auditory-visual variety, particularly auditory-shape and auditory-color, as occurs with mescaline (Smythies, 1953; Klüver, 1966; Marks, 1975), LSD (Pahnke and Richards, 1966; McKenna, 1982; Hofmann, 1983), cannabis (Marks, 1975), and ayahuasca (Shanon, 2003; Fotiou, 2012). Such auditory imagery is sometimes reported to be dynamic in nature fluctuating with the sounds as they change (e.g., Pahnke and Richards, 1966; Hofmann, 1983), as when listening to music.…”

“…The psychedelic renaissance in which we currently find ourselves has occurred in anthropology and is gaining steam (Doyle 2012;Fotiou 2012;Langlitz 2012;Letcher 2007). Ethnographic studies are making important contributions to our understanding of policies, practices, socialities, knowledges, and experiences associated with the contemporary use of psychedelics, recreationally, religiously, and therapeutically around the world.…”
