Worldwide occurrence records suggest a global decline in bee species richness

Abstract: Wild and managed bees are key pollinators, providing ecosystem services to a large fraction of the world's flowering plants, including ~85% of all cultivated crops. Recent reports of wild bee decline and its potential consequences are thus worrisome. However, evidence is mostly based on local or regional studies; global status of bee decline has not been assessed yet. To fill this gap, we analyzed publicly available worldwide occurrence records from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility spanning more th… Show more

“…Concern about declining bee populations (Cameron et al., 2011; Potts et al., 2010; Zattara & Aizen, 2021) has led to increased use of bee sampling and monitoring protocols using pan (i.e. bowl) traps (LeBuhn et al., 2013; Westphal et al., 2008).…”

“…France, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Norway (Christmann, 2019c;Dicks et al, 2016a). The European Union invests billions to subsidize AES (BatĂĄry et al, 2015;De Snoo et al, 2013;McCracken et al, 2015), but even in countries paying farmers for seeding wildflower strips (WFS) for decades, the decline of pollinators progresses (Biesmeijer et al, 2006;Carvalheiro et al, 2013;EU, 2020;Hallmann et al, 2017;Powney et al, 2019;Zattara & Aizen, 2021). Farmers dislike even paid WFS (Kleijn et al, 2019).…”

“…Despite their importance, bee diversity has been decreasing (Potts et al 2010). One of the main factors responsible for this decline is land use modification, including urbanization (Harrison et al 2017;Millard et al 2021;Zattara and Aizen 2021). However, some characteristics of the urban environment and the biology of bees allow some species to thrive in cities (Hennig and Ghazoul 2011;Hall et al 2017).…”
