In the past few decades, a considerable number of old houses have been demolished in China’s urban redevelopment projects, which led to the disappearance of some historic buildings and the relocation of the original residents. Recently, the strategy of housing demolition (HD) in Chinese cities has been replaced by housing conservation and renovation (HCR). However, the transition from HD to HCR is not carried out well. This study aims to explore the key challenges in HCR practice by using a mixed method. Based on the field investigations in pilot projects and semistructured interviews, current HCR practices in Shanghai are summarized, and the four key challenges are identified as: (1) funding shortages; (2) an underdeveloped regulatory environment; (3) a psychological gap between the government and residents; and (4) a lack of stakeholders’ involvement. Targeted measures are proposed to mitigate the challenges. The findings and suggestions here could provide valuable references for the government when making decisions on sustainable housing conservation and renovation, and may promote urban renewal practices in China and other developing countries.

Chettinadu, a region in southern India, is situated in Tamil Nadu State 32 km from the west coast of the Bay of Bengal with a total area of 1,550 square kilometers in the heart of Tamil Nadu. The built heritage of Chettinadu is an irreplaceable cultural resource giving it a unique identity and character. In the tentative list of UNESCO 2014, the Chettinadu region has been classified into three clusters based on their Outstanding Universal Values and this provides a framework for our research.The region has experienced a tremendous amount of change from its original design and the old buildings are mirrors of the procession of history and culture that together have formed the heritage of the town. Well known for its palatial mansions with their unique architectural style, the conservation of old buildings is a must in retaining the character of the city. In this paper we studied the historical background of heritage areas and buildings in the Chettinadu region and attempted to establish the values in the built heritage by means of a selected set of variables. To achieve this objective various parameters were analyzed as how the values of the built heritage contribute to the unique sociocultural flavor of Chettinadu. Social, cultural, historical, and architectural values all enhance the image of the town, but assessing their relative importance for purposes of urban planning is a significant challenge. This analysis support the evolution of strategies targeted at preserving and enhancing the built heritage of the region. The varied heritage potential based on the values will help planners and developers to create sustainable programs for modernizing the infrastructure while protecting the inherent values of the built heritage of Chettinadu.

Port facilities are amongst the most important points of the maritime industry. The valuation literature evaluates industrial facilities and their assets from an operational point of view, but by nature, ports locate on coastal areas and have "social value" due to this feature. Although the literature on the valuation of natural resources does not define the value it calculates as social value, this value is indeed social value when evaluations made in terms of the features it shows and the data sources used. The aim of this study is to reveal the scientific methods that can be used to determine the social value of a port and to contribute to the existing methods classifications with an industrial perspective. In this study, a proposal has been developed for the port facilities by emphasizing the social aspects of existing total economic value approaches. The most appropriate method for the port valuation is the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and it is regarded as the tool under the "Stated Preferences" methods. The results can be used as a source for scientists, policy makers, decision makers and investors on port industry. Determining the methods to be used for measuring the social value of a port and determining the steps to be taken to calculate this value can be regarded as the contributions to the mentioned parties.
