X-ray imaging with sub-micron resolution using large-area photon counting detectors Timepix

Abstract: As X-ray micro-CT became a popular tool for scientific purposes a number of commercially available CT systems have emerged on the market. Micro-CT systems have, therefore, become widely accessible and the number of research laboratories using them constantly increases. However, even when CT scans with spatial resolution of several micrometers can be performed routinely, data acquisition with sub-micron precision remains a complicated task. Issues come mostly from prolongation of the scan time inevitably connec… Show more

“…We analysed GPC in the proximal part of the femur by µRTG and µCT. The bone was dissected, mechanically cleaned and examined using either a Bruker SkyScan 1275 µCT scanner or a custom-built µCT system designed for small animal imaging [ 59 , 60 ], following previously described procedures [ 30 , 31 ]. Epiphyseal senescence and ossification status were evaluated blindly by two independent observers.…”

“…While the Specialized Laboratory of Experimental Imaging is equipped with a Bruker SkyScan 1275 micro-CT scanner and a customized micro-CT system designed for small animal imaging 81 the IEAP laboratory operates two in-house developed micro-CT systems utilizing large-area photon counting detectors based on Timepix technology 82 . The SkyScan 1275 was used for scanning of large samples as it is equipped with a highly efficient and fast CMOS flatpanel detector, while the custom systems at laboratory of IEAP were utilized for smaller samples since higher resolution and higher contrast-to-noise ratio could be achieved using these set-ups 83,84 .…”

“…We demonstrated this in a previous study that, in the case of our X-ray tube, the focal-spot movement is one order of magnitude higher than the effect of the electron beam drift [6]. For this reason, we have developed a measurement protocol which can be used for significant improvement in the quality of the high resolution CT reconstruction correcting tube spot movement [4,6]. During the CT data acquisition procedure performed in this work, an object was subjected to 20 sets of 60 tomographic projections, covering a full 360 • rotation by 1200 projections with a 0.3 • angular step, and 40 reference images were also recorded.…”

“…This effect considerably affects the achievable spatial resolution in the reconstructed 3D volumes. Several papers dealing with the quantification of SPD effects and the means for its compensation, including the use of calibration datasets used for several subsequent scans, have been published [4,5]. Many studies treat the SPD effect as stochastic, though.…”
