X-ray mapping technique: a preliminary study in discriminating gunshot residue particles from aggregates of environmental occupational origin

Abstract: The possibility of detection of lead-antimony-barium aggregates from non-firearm sources is confirmed according to the tests performed on brake pads, and firework and automobile workers. Moreover, information on particles taken from cartridge cases shows the relative feeble importance of the morphology in distinguishing gunshot residues. Furthermore, also the presence in the spectrum of other elements (e.g. iron) is not so conclusive. In this panorama, the possibility of discriminating gunshot residue particles… Show more

“…A protocol has been presented for the collection and analysis of gunshot residues from hair (319). An X-ray mapping technique has been investigated for the purpose of discriminating gunshot residue particles from other nonfirearm lead-antimony-barium aggregates (320,321). A previously unreported type of GSR particle consisting of glass fused with other primer components has been reported (322).…”

“…However, no such sources have yet been confirmed. For example, brake-pads or clutch-parts may yield particles of similar elemental composition, however, with different, non-spherical shapes (compare [13][14][15]). Remainders from airbag-igniters are reported to be distinguishable from GSR by the presence of numerous different particles [16].…”

“…Hala ere, azken urteotan, irizpide hori zalantzan jartzen duten zenbait ikerketa plazaratu dira. Alde batetik, zenbait ikertzailek zalantzan jarri dute tiro-aztarnen partikulen esferikotasuna [10]; bestetik, eztabaida sortu da partikula bereizgarrien konposizioaren esklusibotasunari buruz, Pb-Ba-Sb Nora Unceta, Nagore Grijalba, Sandra Benito, Zuriñe Abrego, Alicia Sánchez, M. Aránzazu Goicolea, Alberto Gomez, Asier Vallejo, Ramón J. Barrio konposizio elementala duten partikulak piroteknian eta balazta-pastillak egiten diharduten pertsonetan aurkitu baitira [11,12].…”
